About the West Kitsilano Neighbourhood

An Ecologically Responsible Community

People want to live in West Kitsilano because of its unique character and its wonderful location close to downtown, English Bay, and the University of BC. We are particularly proud:

  • Of our tree-lined streets of character and heritage houses with beautiful gardens, that disguise the fact that many of these houses have been converted to house more than one family, either with rental suites or strata-titled ground-oriented dwelling units
  • That all West Kitsilano residents and visitors to our neighbourhood have access to beautiful parks, beaches, natural foreshore, mountain and ocean views, and many walking paths and safe bicycle routes
  • That the many small unique stores along 4th Avenue and Broadway result in a walkable neighbourhood where the automobile is non-essential
  • That a well-functioning public transportation system has improved over the years to better meet the needs of both West Kitsilano residents and those passing through our neighbourhood
  • That higher density in four-storey apartments along 4th Avenue and Broadway has added even more diversity and density to our neighbourhood
  • That an engaged population has helped to ensure that the neighbourhood qualities that we value so highly have been largely preserved while still embracing changes necessary for a progressive, dynamic, and ecologically responsible future

Planning experts have sometimes used our neighbourhood as an example of how a neighbourhood can provide density without losing its character, livability, and sense of place by creatively adapting its houses as needs and demographics change. We would like to continue to be used as such an example.

Geographical Boundaries

The boundaries of our area reach from the shore of English Bay on the north to the Broadway corridor on the south and from Alma Street on the west to Balsam and Vine Streets on the east. We work closely with the Upper Kitsilano Residents Association which focuses on the area from Broadway south as far as 16th Avenue, with the Kitsilano-Arbutus Residents Association to the east, with the Kits Point Residents Association, and with the Point Grey Natural Foreshore Preservation Society. We also include the rest of Kitsilano in our broader sphere of interest, including East Kitsilano, adjacent to our planning area, which does not currently have a residents association. In addition, we work with neighbouring residents associations, such as North West Point Grey Home Owners to our west, when issues cross our boundaries.
